artist's statement My paintings are a fragment of my daily life combining my fascination with pattern and colour, merging textures and design motifs from my textile practice. I seek to create a glow through layering with paint, imagining places and escaping reality in the process. I begin by throwing down whatever colour I have in front of me to just get rid of the white background. I then begin the process of layering pattern and blocks of colour, each layer becomes a negative superimposition on the previous layer, the process allows some areas to be seen, and others to be hidden or covered up. Navigating through automatic emotive responses, painting allows me to escape the routine of my daily family life. In my paintings multiplicities of fragmented layers rise to the surface and fade again. I work as if I have a computer on hand - adding and deleting where necessary.
